Catalogue of an auction sale by the Loudmer auction house in 1995, showing many illustrated books. These 15 last years gave place to some prestigious sales of modern illustrated books, prestigious for the quality and the quantity of the works suggested, but also for the care and the beauty brought to the catalogue of the sale. It is here the case with this superb catalogue whose cover slides to let appears the painters, whose photographs are reproduced in colours, around Rene Char, in the center. More than 700 books are her described and reproduced, all with original lithographs or engravings, most of the specimens contains suites, or are hand coloured with drawings or watercolours, of are with dedications ; some with bindings by the largest specialists in this century (George Leroux, Monique Mathieu, Pierre-Lucien Martin etc). One finds there books from Braque, Chagall, Picasso, Ernst, Masson, Matisse, Miro and more than 50 other major artists for the masterpieces of the XX century bibliophilic works. A few books taken randomly: "Calligrammes" of Apollinaire illustrated by Chirico in 1930 ; "le cornet à dés" of Max Jacob with an engraving of Picasso, "the prose of Trans-Siberian" of Cendrars, with Sonia Delaunay etc. Miro is him as well represented with more than 50 books proposed. 28 manuscripts autographs of Rene Char hand coloured by his friends painters (with ink, gouache, painting) were also sold in this sale. For the amateurs this catalogue represents a considerable sum of information but also of dream. Back
